Your shipment will include the following planting instructions: hank you very much for visiting www.hostas.com and for ordering our plants. I take pride in our stock and hope that you will share the same excitement. Early spring orders find plants arriving in a variety of growth stages. Hostas will arrive in the following stages (all normal): 1) crown with popping eyes, 2) well developed leaf spikes, 3) flush of leaves, 4) leaves that have been cut back. All plants will exhibit normal first season growth. Major root development will occur during this first year. The second year the hosta will appear as if it was on vitamins over the winter. The second year will usually have 2-4 times the number of leaf spikes appearing in the spring. The third season the hosta will more closely resemble the plants pictured on www.hostas.com. Care of your newly acquired Hosta. Unpack immediately. If your garden spot is not yet prepared, pot the hosta in a pot using a well-drained potting mix. Do not let soil dry out!! Once planted in soil amended with organic material your hosta will thrive. Be aware of the maximum sunlight for your variety of hosta. All hostas can survive in shade. Most grow well in morning sun. Some can tolerate full sun. However, most varieties will show sun burn if planted in full sun. Refer to the care and planting guide for hostas at www.hostas.com. Fertilize with a slow release fertilizer such as Osmocote or 6-24-24. Water with about 1 ½ inches of water per week. If planted under a house overhang, special watering needs must be maintained so that the hosta will develop into the mature specimen that you desire. * * * * * * * * * * * Ornamental Grasses will arrive in the following stages (all normal): 1) dormant, just awakening from long winter's snooze, 2) dormancy fully broken with new growth visible, 3) minimal growth, 4) major growth. Most grasses will still show signs of last year's foliage cut back to several inches. If the grass was shipped dormant, growth will appear within 2 weeks. First year grasses will be ½ to three quarter the height of a mature specimen (usually on the ½ end of the scale). Next spring, your grass will exhibit a large girth increase. The third season the grass will better resemble a mature specimen. Care of your newly acquired Ornamental Grass. Unpack immediately. If your garden spot is not yet prepared, pot the ornamental grass in a pot using a well-drained potting mix. Do not let soil dry out!! Once planted in soil amended with organic material your grass will thrive. Be aware of the sunlight needs of the different varieties of ornamental grass. All Miscanthus and Panicum are warm weather grasses and require full sun to perform well. Others like Carex, Calamagrostis, and Miscanthus sin. 'Purpurascens' can tolerate a greater amount of shade. Refer to the care guide at www.hostas.com. Fertilize with Miracle Grow or other general purpose fertilizers. Grasses build a very hardy and extensive root system. Water well the first year. Generally all grasses will do fine with minimal maintenance the second and following years. Next year, cut back the foliage at the end of March (or sooner for zone 6 and higher) to about 4-6 inches. * * * * * * * * * * * If you have any questions about planting your newly acquired ornamental plants, we would prefer you to e-mail us at mailorder@hostas.com.
