Generally, when hostas get mature, one will have little problem with weeds coming up through the plant. But, one does have spaces between plants and weeds must be contended with there squarely. I love to get down and dirty, at least at this point in my life. It give me a great chance to check out how my plants are being attended to by God. So, I don't mind hand pulling weeds by the old hand method. I also use some mulch. The information contained on this page is primarily for completeness. WARNING: Don't use PREEN on hostas!! I have called the manufacturer and they said that PREEN will kill or severely harm the hosta! If the plant is not listed on PREEN, do not use it around the plant!!
