Story Board #1 - These are the steps preparing the hosta clump before it is
divided.
 |
I like to divide hostas just as the petitoles are just
emerging out of the ground. They are small enough to stay out of the
way of injury and allow a clear visual of the hosta crown once the dirt is
washed from the roots. |
 |
Life the clump from the ground trying to get as much of the
roots as possible. This gets increasing more difficult when the clumps
are more and more mature. This clump is Hosta 'Stiletto'. Because of
the nature of the petitoles (that is how they emerge from the crown), it is
imperative for this variety to have the dirt washed from the roots. I
wash all dirt from the roots from all varieties. |
 |
With the jet of a garden hose, wash away the dirt. I
was hostas off on a garden cart that has a grating for a top. This
allows me to still stand and allows for the debris to be clear from the work
area. |
 |
The finished product from a nice wash job. Note that
all of the roots are exposed. This allows for easy untangling of the
roots after the crown is cut at the appropriate spots. |
 |
This is another variety of hosta washed. Note how
different the roots are from the above hosta. You will find many
different styles of hosta roots. |
