Ornamental Grass Renovation

John 11:25-26 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live even if he dies, 11:26 and the one who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

As grass clumps get older, they may have a tendency to dead-center. There is nothing wrong with the plant, it is just getting too woody.  That is too much old growth has smothered the room for new growth. This is definitely time to renovate the plant.

Possible solutions to a grass that has dead-centered:

  • Dig up the plant, remove the dead center material, divide if desired, and replant.
  • If the complete ring of the clump is still viable, leave it alone.  The new growth around the ring of the clump will completely cover and hide the dead center.  You will not even know that the center of the clump is not sending up any grass canes.

Example pictures of clumps that had dead-centered.  Don't worry, each of these clumps produced a wonder display of foliage and plumes!

This grass was a Miscanthus sinensis 'Sarabande'.  As you can see the ring of the clump is coming in quite nicely.  Was the grass grew, it was a completely normal clump of grass without renovation.
This grass was a Miscanthus sinensis 'Puenktchen'.  There was a perennial weed developing in the upper portion of the crown.  It was removed.  Again, the perimeter of the clump filled in full and it was not evident that the center was not sending up any new canes.  Again, no renovation was necessary.
