Common Name: Tufted Hair Grass, Tussock Grass, Scottish Tufted Hair Grass
Latin: Deschampsia (deh-SHAMP-see-ah) caespitosa (ses-pih-TOH-sah)
Description: Tufted hair grass is a densely-tufted, upright-open, mound-forming, semi-evergreen perennial. It is grown for its large, colorful, light green, graceful, early-blooming plumes that appear May through August. The 2-3' vivid yellow to gold plume are used in flower arrangements. Tufted hair grass is an excellent specimen plant in a conventional or water garden. It is best used in group planting in the middle of a border and prefers a location in full sun or light shade with moist, slightly acid, or neutral soils. A cool season grass.
